Today should be the happiest day of Rashad and Genesis’ lives — he’s planned it all out — the perfect proposal before the perfect concert from the couple’s favorite artist. Things, however, almost never go as planned and when old secrets put their relationship at risk, they are forced to confront their commitment to each other and to justice. This intimate and moving play set amid the Kavanaugh hearings makes the political quite personal, in a real time rollercoaster ride of romance and reckoning.

Andrea is thrilled to return to Portland Center Stage and feels incredibly grateful to work with this talented group of artists, whom she not only considers collaborators but also friends. A special thanks to Chip for assembling this remarkable team. Originally from Miami, FL, Andrea graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance from Florida A&M University, a Historically Black College and University. Some of her recent favorites include Clyde’s (PCS/Syracuse Stage), Passing Strange directed by Rodney Hicks (Portland Playhouse), Gem of The Ocean (PCS), and The Wolves (Portland Playhouse). On the film side, she wrote and directed her first short film, You Don’t Know Naan, with the BLVCK Film Collective, portrayed Ori in the Montavilla Jazz Call + Response project, Last Signs of June, written by Deejuliano Scott, and played the role of Brenna, the ex who returns, in Kitty by Mischa Webley. Up next, she’ll be performing as Cecily Cardew in The Importance of Being Earnest, adapted by Kamilah Bush, at Portland Center Stage.
Loy A. Webb is a Chicago-born playwright, attorney and theatre journalist. Her plays include The Light (MCC Theater 2018/2019, Outer Critics Circle nomination for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play; The New Colony 2017/2018, Joseph Jefferson Award) and His Shadow (16th Street Theater 2019/2020). She was an inaugural Tutterow Fellow at Chicago Dramatists, and as theatre journalist she is a member of the Association of Women of Journalist-Chicago, a past mentor with the AWJ-Chicago/Goodman Theatre’s Cindy Bandle Young Critics Program, and a contributing theater critic for Newcity. Loy holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a J.D. from The John Marshall Law School.
Chip Miller is a director and producer, currently in the role of Associate Artistic Director at Portland Center Stage at the Armory. They were previously the Artistic Associate / Resident Director at Kansas City Repertory Theatre. Chip has developed work with playwrights including Kevin Wilmott, Kara Lee Corthron, Brittany K. Allen, Catherine Trieschmann, Darren Canady, Andrew Rosendorf, Susan Kander & Roberta Gumbel, Michelle T. Johnson, and Michael Finke. They have developed work at The William Inge Theatre Festival, NYU’s New Plays for Young Audiences, La Jolla Playhouse’s DNA Series, Portland Center Stage’s JAW Festival, The Midwest Dramatists Center, KCRep’s OriginKC New Works Festival, The Colorado New Play Summit, The Living Room Theatre, and Musical Theatre Heritage.
Alex is a Portland-based scenic designer, happy to be making her debut with Portland Center Stage. Credits include with Shaking The Tree Theatre (We Wrote This With You In Mind), Artists Repertory Theatre (Sapience), Third Rail Repertory Theatre (Middletown Mall, The Music Man), as well as designs with Profile Theatre, Orpheus PDX, Oregon Children’s Theatre, The Theatre Company, Portland Shakespeare Project, PassinArt, Broadway Rose Theatre Co., Bag&Baggage Productions, Crave Theatre, Imago Theatre, The Actors Conservatory, and others. Dre Johnson (gender fluid) is a Queer Blatinx multi-hyphenate designer whose work spans sustainable apparel, intersectional feminism, artistic expression, and environmental justice. They founded Hidden Opulence in 2017, a Portland-based business focused on alterations, vintage refurbishment, and small run garment production with a sustainable lens. Dre champions an emphasis on BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities to help them look, feel and shine their best. Costume design is a medium that is integrated daily for her. Dre is thrilled to be debuting this passion with Portland Center Stage for The Light.
Sophina is the founder of local QTPOC dance theatre company Roots and All Theatre Ensemble, centering marginalized identities and breaking the boundaries of realism, who you may know from "Liminal," "The Between Spaces," and "Ritual Treatment." She is thrilled to be designing her first show at Portland Center Stage, where she has assisted Marika Kent for several years. She also designs at Profile, Artists Repertory Theater, Bag and Baggage, Passinart, Salt and Sage, FUSE, Oregon Children's Theater, From the Ground Up, Crave, Hand2Mouth, and more. As a theatre maker, playwright, director, deviser, and choreographer, her work centers the intersectionality of identities as a neurodivergent, bisexual Puerto Rican woman, and prominently features themes of mental illness and trauma, with surrealist or magical realist motifs
Phil is a theatrical producer and artist based in the Pacific Northwest. He currently serves as the Program Director for Coho Theatre in Portland, OR. Some of his favorite recent productions include Fat Ham (Seattle Rep) Clyde’s (PCS/ Syracuse Stage); Mrs. Harrison and Redwood (Portland Center Stage); Pipeline (Confrontation Theater); Hands Up (Red Door Project); American Fast, An Octoroon, and The Humans (Artists Repertory Theatre). Kamilah is a playwright, dramaturg, and educator originally from North Carolina. She holds a B.F.A. in theater education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was a NC Teaching Fellow. She currently holds the position of Literary Manager at PCS. Kamilah has spent several seasons at celebrated regional theaters across the country, including Triad Stage in Greensboro, NC, Asolo Repertory Theater in Sarasota, FL, and Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. She was a Playwright in Residence at Williamstown Theater Festival in 2024 and was featured as part of their Fridays @ 3 Reading Series in 2023.
Teniece Divya Johnson is an Intimacy Director, Fight Director, Stunt Performer, and Movement Storyteller working across television, film and stage. The first Black and first non-binary intimacy director on Broadway with Slave Play, Teniece serves as a resolute advocate for a decolonized collaborative approach to art, Black intimacy, Kink and Queer representation. They are also the founder of BlackIntimacyConsentCollective.org, a community based educational organization around Black intimacy, consent and wellness. Some additional credits include Paradise on Hulu, POSE, Lovecraft Country, Wu-Tang: An American Saga on Hulu, Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad, RAMY, Diarra From Detroit, and West Side Story with Steven Spielberg. Off-stage sharing boundaries and empathy masterclasses with colleges, universities and corporations.
Alea Tran is a theatre artist whose interests lie in creating art that is impactful and collaborative. They are excited to return to Portland Center Stage for their PCS stage management debut. Recent productions include two years of Liberace & Liza: Holiday at the Mansion (A Tribute), Coriolanus (production assistant, Portland Center Stage); Diné Nishłį (i am a sacred being) Or, A Boarding School Play (stage manager, Native Theatre Project); American Fast (production manager, Artists Repertory); Adam’s Run (stage manager, Renegade Opera); The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon (asst. stage manager, Oregon Children’s). Alea is a past member of the PATHWAYS mentorship program through Artists Repertory Theatre.
