Isabella K. Saavedra (b. 1998) is an artist based in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Oroville, CA, Saavedra attended Butte College before transferring to Southern Oregon University to earn a B.S. in art. After working at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as a props artisan, Saavedra moved to Portland and is now Assistant Production Manager at Marie Watt Studio.
Saavedra’s practice is an amalgam of painting, sculpture, and textiles that investigates personal history, ancestry, daydream, and collective experiences. Her work is known for its use of texture, unnerving colors, and use of the figure. My work records “now-isms.” I paint my day-to-day experiences and take control of my own narrative and stories, a practice also known as Visual Sovereignty. Thus, “now-isms” is a term that describes the reactive way that I work, yet is embedded with the philosophy of artmaking as an act of visual sovereignty and decolonization.
Portland Center Stage is committed to identifying & interrupting instances of racism & all forms of oppression, through the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, & accessibility (IDEA).
