Join us for special discussion with local Portland artists about DIY culture, custom clothing, and business ownership. Featuring guest panelists Drea Johnson of Hidden Opulence and Amir Morgan of Barnes & Morgan in conversation with moderator Chip Miller, Associate Artistic Director at Portland Center Stage.
Topics will range from personal and creative histories, the pros and cons of the DIY (do it yourself) custom clothing and tailoring industries, how their work relates to costume design for theater productions, and their plans for the future.

Amir Morgan is the founder of Barnes and Morgan, specializing in garments that acknowledge the past, stand the test of time, and are tailored for the moment. Barnes and Morgan also strives to be a welcoming source of education to remove the complexities and nuances around tailored garments and style.

Hidden Opulence is a design house that’s focused in apparel sustainability and upcycling in Portland, Oregon. The business is divided into two factions of serving both existing brands and the general public. We feel pride especially in creating a home for those who identify as Queer, Non-Binary, and/or BIPOC. Our team is focused on building ideas to re-imagine, repair, or alter older garments and fabrics into something like new and innovative in its wear.

Before joining Portland Center Stage, Chip (they/them) held the role of artistic associate/resident director at Kansas City Repertory Theatre for seven years, where their directing credits included School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, Welcome to Fear City, Sex with Strangers, and A Raisin in the Sun. Beyond KCRep stages, directing credits include Becoming Martin by Kevin Willmott (world premiere, The Coterie Theatre), dwb: driving while black (Lawrence Arts Center), and 4:48 Psychosis (The Buffalo Room).
Chip has developed work with playwrights including Kevin Willmott, Kara Lee Corthron, Brittany K. Allen, Catherine Trieschmann, Darren Canady, Andrew Rosendorf, Michelle T. Johnson, and Michael Finke. He has developed work at The William Inge Theater Festival, NYU Steinhardt’s New Plays for Young Audiences, Orlando Shakes’ Playfest, Midwest Dramatists Center, Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s OriginKC: New Works Festival, and Portland Center Stage at The Armory’s JAW Festival. Chip has a B.F.A. from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
